Studies in Paper Plaster Canvas
Artist Statement
The focus of my work has been exploring the possibilities of 3D mixed media. While experimenting with paper, plaster and canvas I let the process guide my direction. I discovered I was most interested in simple shapes, both biomorphic and geometric . I didn’t overthink the final outcomes. I wanted the pieces to have movement, light and air flow.
Nature and the environment are constant sources of inspiration. The piece Ocean Waves was inspired by the rectangular boarders of National Geographic magazines and the movement of water, the color yellow represents the sun. Sometimes my work can be self-referential. Neon Shadows is the result of cutting the covers of NatGeo. I started to see rectangles everywhere. I continued using the ½ metric and started creating rectangles, creating piles of them until I had enough to play around and create something. The flight patterns of birds influenced the shape and connection of the rectangles.
